Can Invisalign Fix an Overbite?

What Is an Overbite?
An overbite (sometimes called a “deep bite”) occurs when the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth excessively. A small degree of overlap is normal — typically 1–3mm. When the overlap is significantly more than that, it’s considered a malocclusion that can cause:
- Uneven wear on the lower front teeth
- Jaw pain or TMJ issues
- Gum irritation (lower teeth biting into the upper palate)
- Changes to facial profile
Types of Overbites
Dental Overbite
Caused by the position of the teeth themselves. This type responds very well to Invisalign treatment.
Skeletal Overbite
Caused by jaw structure — when the upper jaw protrudes or the lower jaw is underdeveloped. Mild skeletal overbites can often be improved with Invisalign, but severe cases may require jaw surgery (orthognathic treatment) in addition to orthodontics.
How Does Invisalign Treat an Overbite?
Invisalign corrects overbites by:
- Moving upper front teeth backward into proper position
- Moving lower teeth forward to create proper alignment
- Using precision bite ramps built into the aligner to open the bite
- Utilizing rubber band attachments (elastics) that work alongside the aligners for more significant corrections
What Results Can I Expect?
For dental overbites and mild-to-moderate skeletal overbites, Invisalign achieves excellent results. Most patients see significant improvement, though some cases may not reach the same level of correction as traditional braces with elastics.
